Davido, Rema and Fally Ipupa Return to Afro Nation Portugal

Davido, Rema and Fally Ipupa Return to Afro Nation Portugal

Every summer the sands of Praia da Rocha in Portimão become a meeting point for the diaspora, and next year the scene gathers there a month early. Afro Nation Portugal has confirmed Davido, Rema and Fally Ipupa as the headliners of its 2027 edition, which runs from 9 to 11 June on the same Algarve beach the festival has called home since it launched in 2019.

The first wave, announced on 23 September, carries roughly 30 names across three programmes, according to Pulse Nigeria. Here is who is playing, what changes with the earlier dates, and what the bill says about where the circuit is heading.

A Month Earlier on the Algarve Coast

The biggest structural change is the calendar. Recent editions have run in July, but the 2027 festival moves to the start of the European summer, roughly a month earlier than fans are used to, as The Needle Drop noted. The weekend now opens with a party on 8 June, runs its three main days from 9 to 11 June and closes with a final party on 12 June. On the 2027 calendar that puts the main days on Wednesday to Friday, with the parties on the Tuesday and the Saturday either side.

Pulse counts the 2027 event as the seventh Afro Nation Portugal. The sixth wrapped in July this year, so the gap to the next edition is about a month shorter than usual, and tickets for it are already on sale. Presale tickets went on sale at 10am BST on 29 September, with general sale following at the same time on 30 September, according to Dork.

For fans who travel in for the weekend, the earlier dates mean planning flights and rooms for June rather than July. The festival draws tens of thousands of people from across the world each summer, Pulse reports, and its own website bills it as the world’s biggest Afrobeats festival, built around music, food, art and culture.

Davido, Rema and Fally Ipupa Return to the Top of the Bill

All three headliners have played Afro Nation Portugal before, and the announcement leans on that history. The trio will top the LIT Stage.

Davido comes back to a festival he has headlined before, this time following his album Oriadé. He was also part of the 2025 edition, which The Needle Drop lists alongside Burna Boy, Tems, Mary J. Blige and Booba, so for many regulars on the beach he is a familiar face at the top of the poster.

Rema made his Afro Nation Portugal headline debut in 2024, when he topped the bill alongside Asake, J Hus and Tyla while riding the global success of “Calm Down”. He returns with a Grammy nomination behind him: his second album, HEIS, was nominated for Best Global Music Album, and his recent singles include “Ozeba” and “Baby (Is It A Crime)”.

Fally Ipupa completes the trio. He appeared at the 2024 edition and returns as he marks 20 years in music, bringing Congolese rumba and contemporary African pop to a bill that Pulse describes as continuing Nigeria’s dominant run at the festival.

The Rest of the LIT Stage

Below the headliners, eight more acts are confirmed for the LIT Stage in the first wave: Omah Lay, Odeal, Shenseea, Valiant, Victony, Bamby, Miimii KDS and Rayvanny. That is a deep bench for an opening announcement, and it gives the weekend plenty of variety beneath the headliners.

The final night ends with South Gidi, the live project built around DJ Tunez and DJ Maphorisa’s EP featuring Wizkid and Mavo. It made its live debut at Afro Nation this summer and returns to take over the closing afterparty, according to Dork.

The line-up is not complete. Pulse describes this as a first wave of around 30 confirmations with more acts expected, and Dork notes that further names are still to be announced, so the bill will keep growing before June.

Amapiano and Electronic Sounds Beyond the Main Stage

Amapiano keeps its own home at the festival. Afro Nation introduced the Piano People stage to its Portugal edition in 2022, The Needle Drop notes, and the 2027 programme is led by Kabza De Small, whom Pulse calls an amapiano pioneer, and the duo TxC, with Dlala Thukzin appearing as a special guest.

The rest of the first Piano People names are 031Choppa, 2woBunnies, Benzo, Thatohatsi, Uncool MC, W4DE, Xduppy B2B Al Xapo, Young Stunna and Zee Nxumalo. This summer the stage was headlined by Uncle Waffles, Pulse reports, and it has become a fixture of the weekend rather than a side attraction.

The Afrotronic Takeover also returns for African electronic music, with Caiiro, Djeff, Aniko, Jamiie and JNR SA confirmed so far. Taken together, the three programmes show how wide the festival’s idea of African music has become. Alongside Afrobeats and amapiano, the weekend now covers R&B, dancehall, hip-hop and electronic music, with fashion, food and wider cultural programming on the beach.

How Afro Nation Portugal Became the Circuit’s Flagship

Afro Nation launched on Praia da Rocha in 2019, built around Afrobeats and music from across the African diaspora, and its programme has widened over the years, The Needle Drop notes. Its headliners since then read like a roll call of the scene’s biggest stars. Past bills have included Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, Megan Thee Stallion, 50 Cent, Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj, and Pulse credits the festival with helping push Afrobeats and amapiano onto global stages.

The crowds grew with the bills. More than 40,000 people from 180 countries attended the festival’s fifth-anniversary edition in 2025, according to The Needle Drop. This year’s sixth edition was led by Wizkid and Asake, with Gunna and Kehlani appearing as special guests. Asake’s grip on the Afrobeats charts has been one of the stories of the year, as we reported when Asake held eight of Billboard’s top 20 Afrobeats songs.

The brand has also travelled. Afro Nation has expanded beyond Portugal to Ghana, Puerto Rico, Miami and Detroit, but Pulse describes the Portugal edition as its flagship, and the 2027 announcement treats it that way, with three returning headliners confirmed more than eight months before the gates open.

What the First Wave Says About the Scene

The headline story is continuity. Pulse frames the 2027 bill as an extension of the pattern that has defined the festival since 2019, with Nigerian superstars at the centre of the stage nearly every year, and Davido and Rema keep that run going.

The supporting cast tells a broader story. A Congolese headliner marking two decades in music, an amapiano stage led by one of the genre’s pioneers and a programme devoted to African electronic music give the weekend a wider map than any single city could. For a festival that began as a celebration of Afrobeats, that breadth is now part of the identity.

“Davido, Rema and Fally Ipupa give Portugal three different routes into African pop on a single stage, and that range is what keeps this beach at the centre of the summer circuit,” said the AfroMusic.News curator team.

For fans planning ahead, the key dates are fixed: the opening party on 8 June, the festival from 9 to 11 June and the closing party on 12 June, all at Praia da Rocha. Tickets are on general sale, and more names for Afro Nation Portugal are still to come.
