Seyi Vibez Started SWAGUU in Cape Town and Finished It in Lagos

SWAGUU began in Cape Town. Seyi Vibez started shaping his sixth studio album in South Africa before returning home to Lagos to finish it, and the record, released on 18 September, carries both places in its sound: the street-pop of Ketu and Ikorodu, the Lagos districts where he grew up, and the wider horizon of an artist who now spends much of his time in England.

Executive-produced by Burna Boy and running to 14 tracks, SWAGUU follows Fuji Moto, the album that OkayAfrica credits with bringing “the streets of Lagos to headphones, sound systems, concerts, and festivals worldwide”. OkayAfrica described that record as “daring and experimental, yet at the same time an embrace of tradition”. SWAGUU arrives with a single guest, the American rapper Quavo, who joins Seyi Vibez on the closing title track.

From Cape Town to Lagos, and a Title Found in an Old Song

Speaking to OkayAfrica the day before the release, Seyi Vibez said the album began taking shape in Cape Town before he went back to Lagos to complete it. The name came to him while he was revisiting “SHAOLIN”, one of his 2025 tracks, and the idea grew into a full body of work from there.

“I feel like SWAGUU is more [an] extension of Seyi Vibez, more international Seyi Vibez,” he said. “[But] It still sounds like I’m from Nigeria, I’m local.”

That pull between the international and the local runs through everything he has said about the record. He told the outlet that his “state of mind right now is international”, while insisting that he is taking “my African culture, my African fan base, and my African love” with him wherever the music goes.

Burna Boy Behind the Boards

The executive producer credit is the detail that turned heads across the scene. Burna Boy has been a mentor figure for Seyi Vibez, who has spoken about advice from him to never show weakness and keep moving, according to Notjustok. DancehallMag described the collaboration as “the kind of pairing that makes sense once you hear it, but still catches you off guard when it’s confirmed”, and argued that Burna Boy’s involvement adds a layer of credibility that goes beyond a co-sign.

In its weekly new-music column, OkayAfrica’s Johannesburg-based correspondent Tšeliso Monaheng called the finished album “focused, sure-footed, and free in spirit”. The same column noted that SWAGUU arrives on the back of two singles, “GTA”, released in July, and “Back 2 U”, released in August, both of which sit on the tracklist.

Inside the 14 Tracks

The album opens with “Volume”, which Notjustok describes as a burst of energy to kick off the project, and runs through cuts including “GTA”, “Diamonds”, “Melanin”, “God”, “Pansa”, “Ilome”, “Alagia”, “El Jaja”, “Alubarika”, “Akpan Akpari” and “Oble” before closing on “Swaguu” with Quavo. “Back 2 U”, the emotionally driven street-pop single from August, completes the set.

Reviewers have gravitated to different corners of it. OkayAfrica heard calm in “Diamonds”, something beyond time in “God”, amapiano in “Pansa” and pure romance in “Ilome”. Notjustok pointed to “God”, the fifth song, as a reflective moment amid an otherwise street-driven, hustle-focused sound, with later cuts such as “Alubarika” staying in the lane that has defined his recent run.

Local Sound, Global Plan

Seyi Vibez is not presenting SWAGUU as a retreat to his roots. “I’m young. I’m just 26, so I feel like it’s affecting my sound,” he told OkayAfrica, describing how years of travelling outside Nigeria have shaped his music. He was equally clear that the shift is not permanent: “My next project can be more African, more street.”

What he will not do, he said, is rebuild his sound for listeners abroad. “I’m not trying to change my sound to make it appeal to the global audience. I’m trying to make them fit in my own world.” He pointed to fans who sing his lyrics without speaking the language as proof that it works, saying they connect to his emotions rather than the words.

DancehallMag read the Quavo feature the same way, as a sign that he “is thinking about a wider audience without reshaping his sound to chase one”. The outlet called SWAGUU the most focused and deliberate project he has put together to date.

Collaborators Old and New

Quavo’s presence on the title track is the album’s most visible reach beyond Nigeria, and DancehallMag called it “an interesting choice for an album that otherwise keeps things close to home and rooted in Nigerian street culture”. The outlet also left the bigger question open, writing that whether the album shifts how the broader music world sees Seyi Vibez “is a question that is still very much open”.

His wider list of collaborators already reads like a map of modern Nigerian pop. OkayAfrica lists Burna Boy, Olamide, Ayra Starr, Omah Lay and Kizz Daniel among the artists he has worked with, yet he says a big name is not what draws him to a session. “The power of collaboration is not just by doing songs with major stars,” he said.

Keeping the guest list to one name on SWAGUU puts the weight squarely on his own voice, which is where his fans have always found him. He told OkayAfrica that listeners abroad “could just connect to my emotions, my vibration”, adding: “It’s not about my language. It’s just about who I am.”

Five Billion Streams and Counting

The ambition rests on real numbers. OkayAfrica reports that his catalogue has passed 5 billion streams across all platforms, and that his blend of street-pop, Afrobeats, Fuji and personal storytelling made him one of Nigeria’s most-streamed artists in 2024 and 2025.

The run began with his 2019 debut single “Anybody” and gathered pace through the albums Billion Dollar Baby and Thy Kingdom Come, according to Notjustok. Success has not changed the instinct behind the writing, he says. “I feel like I have the same feelings I used to have back [then]. I still have the same feelings now because I’m always in survival mode. I never stop,” he told OkayAfrica.

That survival instinct shapes how he talks about money and status, too. “Even though I grow, even though I go to another level, it’s still like I have to survive no matter what,” he said. At home, he wants to be “a good representation” for Nigerians who come from circumstances like his own. “I don’t need to use my money to oppress you,” he said. “What I need to do is motivate you.”

Street-pop’s reach is not limited to him. Earlier this month, AfroMusic.News reported that Asake holds eight of Billboard’s top 20 Afrobeats songs, another sign of how far the sound of Lagos now travels.

What Comes Next for Seyi Vibez

Asked which artist is on his radar, he named one: “Right now, maybe The Weeknd.” He also set himself a deadline on the record, telling OkayAfrica that he expects to be a global star within the next three years, and on his own terms. “I just want to step out. I want to be different,” he said. “I feel like everyone can be a star, but I want to be a different star.”

Whatever the next three years bring, the compass stays fixed. “Nigeria is always home no matter where I live in this world,” Seyi Vibez said. SWAGUU, begun in Cape Town and finished in Lagos, is the first record to test how far that home can stretch.
