A Mid-Eighties Lagos Childhood, a University Town in Ile-Ife, and a Scottish Address

Lagos in the mid-eighties was rebuilding its own pop music, and Angel Dee grew up in the middle of it. Two moves later, his own streaming profile lists him in Fife, on the east coast of Scotland. show me love is a Pop and Afrobeats record that crossed that distance. The distance is the most interesting thing about it.

Angel Dee’s music is in the playlist below, and his run of coverage is collected on the Angel Dee profile. show me love came to this desk through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news titles. Press play, then read on.

The City Show Me Love Came From, and the Two Places After It

Angel Dee is Oladele Madamidola. He calls himself a Nigerian Afropop singer-songwriter who blends conventional Afro with a personal, poetic style, and he grew up in Lagos. That city ran the engine room of Nigerian popular music. The industry, the studios and the audience all sat within a few miles of each other. A young listener there absorbed the whole apparatus simply by living in it.

He then left for Obafemi Awolowo University, several hours away in Ile-Ife. That is a different Nigeria. A university town in Osun State rather than a megacity, and the kind of place where a musician plays to the same few hundred people repeatedly instead of vanishing into a market of twenty million.

The third address surprises. His profile lists Fife, in Scotland, roughly four thousand miles from the scene his music belongs to. The cover photograph makes the point for him. It shows him outside Edinburgh Castle, arms wide, on a grey afternoon. Plenty of Afrobeats travels that route now. It usually travels the other way, though: the artist cuts the record in Lagos and finds the audience abroad. Angel Dee makes it from the diaspora and aims it back.

What the City Left in the Record

Distance shows up in the writing rather than in the production. The Afrobeats architecture stays intact. Percussion and low end do the rhythmic work a Lagos record does, and nothing about the groove apologises for where he cut it. What sits on top is more careful than a club record needs. He calls it lyrical depth, and the phrasing bears that out, with lines you follow rather than shout back.

That combination places him among a particular set of Lagos artists rather than the headline names. Simi is the closest reference point. She keeps the words in front and lets the Afropop frame carry them. Tiwa Savage built the template for a Lagos pop record that travels internationally without diluting itself first. And Asake represents the newer street-pop wave that made the city louder and more percussive again. Angel Dee sits between the first two.

The Catalogue Behind the Single

show me love is not a debut, which matters when you read a career rather than a moment. His Audiomack page carries a working discography: the albums IFE, EASY, Heart & Soul, Rise Again and a remastered G(r)ace. Songs there include Agustina, FIRE, Maggi No Dey and Throwback. He joined that platform in February 2020, and his account has passed 127,000 plays.

Those are not enormous numbers. Do not read them as such. They describe a musician who has released steadily for years from outside the industry’s centre of gravity, without a label push, and without the Lagos proximity that usually does half the work. His audience spreads thin across platforms. Roughly four thousand on Facebook, a little over two thousand on Instagram, eighteen hundred on TikTok. It accumulated release by release.

AfroMusic.News’s curator team: “The Lagos-to-diaspora record is normally a story about leaving. This one reads the other way. The groove is unmistakably from the city he grew up in, and the writing is unmistakably from someone with distance to think. Both things are audible, and neither cancels the other.”
